In the age of COVID-19, traveling has since become a distant fantasy. But as many countries have started to roll out vaccines in phases, it’s important to be aware of the cybersecurity tips everyone should apply once traveling becomes easily accessible again.

When traveling, it’s important to remember that your phone and other devices store and transmit personal information, which is as valuable (or more) as the items in your suitcase.

Here are some cybersecurity tips for your next travel adventure:

Before you head to the airport …

  • Make sure that all of your devices’ software and antivirus software are up-to-date.
  • Back up your information

While traveling…

  • Make sure that your devices are secure and guarded in public places
  • Consider using a privacy screen to limit the visibility of your screen. You want to ensure that no one is able to get personal information from you by simply looking over at your screen.
  • Don’t use the public Wi-Fi to make online purchases
  • Turn off the auto-join feature when logging into any public Wi-Fi networks
  • Use a virtual private network (VPN) from a trusted source
  • Think before you click any suspicious or unknown links. Delete emails that are suspicious or from unknown sources.
  • Avoid accessive location sharing. It may be tempting to share a lot of information about your travel adventures, but doing so may put you at risk of a security threat at your residence or hotel room. So it would be advisable to limit the information you post online about your specific whereabouts.
  • Disable/Limit Bluetooth connectivity
